Teah: Because reading is awesome and fun and more people should do it and book nerds should come together in unity against... no one in particular.
Nazmi: Motivation for myself to keep reading, and more reading material from me to draw from. Have fellow book lovers come together and share their love of books with other people from all over the country.
Zairina: at the book fair my answer to cana bulih kamu buat book swap ani? i said "kami ani banarnya andang minat membaca. and kami kdg2 suka pinjam2 buku and tukar2 buku sesama sendiri. skalinya dtg tah idea atu arah kwn kami. mun betukar sesama sendiri, limited jua tu kan? why not exchange with other ppl other than friends? we can get "new" books and make new friends in the process." it was BS but that's how i assumed it all started
2. Was it hard to start up? (capital wise, book wise)
Teah: It gets easier with each swap because we have books that were not picked up from the last one that we'll keep bringing forward to the next.
Nazmi: It wasn't a cakewalk as nothing of this sort had been done before here, so we had little experience to draw on except from other bookswap experiences written up online from all over the world. As Teah said, it does get easier with each successive event, and people interested in starting up their own bookswaps can learn from our experience.
Zairina: what Teah said. And Naz said. Do we need capital? Not really but it would be great to have some for refreshment and whatnot. Some snacks swappers can enjoy as they meet other swappers.
3. How's the public mindset about this project?
Teah: Positive so far! If there were negative ones, we've swept them under the rug and sprayed poison all over it.
Nazmi: People who did not know what it was all about were curious, and once they learned what a bookswap was about, were pleasantly surprised and supportive of the projects, and they have expressed that they would like to see more of these kind of activities in the future.
Zairina: When I was manning the booth for the book fair, I received and overheard a LOT of positive responses. Parents loved the idea. I have people walking by saying "bisai jua ah" "bagus eh!"
4. Why swap?
Teah: Because it is cheap! And there are a ton of books that people don't want on their shelf. One person's garbage is another person's DIAMOND!
Nazmi: Saving money by swapping books rather than buying new ones. Encourage discussions of books you have read because now other people would have read them too.
Zairina: no money involved. it's sort of free but not really. berter trade!!!!
5. What sort of books (genre) to bring and swap?
Teah: Our favourite quote in the booth is "No text books, no phone books."
Nazmi: What books you're expecting to get out of the bookswap should be the kind of books you should be bringing to the bookswaps, so I recommend bringing those kind of books to this event.
Zairina: any book. not magazines, not text books, not comics, not pass exam books. i got a lot of these questions during the book fair.
6. Age range allowed?
Teah: Anyone can come! Except the dead. We don't know how to talk to dead people.
Nazmi: All ages. Right now we have primarily teenagers and young adults visiting our bookswaps and bookmeets, but we hope to have more adults and younger kids to come by and have a look too. The great thing about books themselves that a lot of them are not age-restrictive.
Zairina: if the child can read, sure why not? reading isn't restricted to a certain age
7. Does it all have to be new?
Teah: We've seen semi-worn out books, and we've seen yellowing pages with liver spots on its side, and we've seen fresh new ones that I bought two months ago and hated. No restrictions except--let's all say it together--no text books, no phone books!
Nazmi: I'd love it if people swapped in some old books, which sometimes have a history which is another story by itself.
Zairina: old books, new books, we welcome them. as long as the condition of the book is still ok. not torn or missing any pages.
8. Any restriction? (age, genre)
Teah: Nay! Harlequin romance or whatever, all are good. No satan worshipping books, I guess...?
Nazmi: Probably the same answer as number 6 above.
Zairina: not really. reading books shouldn't have restrictions. everyone has a genre that they like. i won't force anyone to read what i read and vice versa. reading is for everyone!
9. Do our "swappers" have to come in a proper formal attire to come?
Teah: As long as you're nicely clothed. Don't come in just your underwear or naked... That is just as bad as dead people.
Nazmi: We require three-piece suits minimum-- just kidding. Wear clothes that feel comfortable to you. The bookswap in Seria will be in an air-conditioned area, and if you plan to stick around for a while (and we hope you do!), maybe bring a jacket.
Zairina: everyone must dress as their favorite character from a book. i kid, i kid! they can dress however they feel comfy.
10. Other venues?
Teah: I would really like us to have one near a shop that gives free ice-cream.

11. What's your favorite author(s)?
Teah: Jean Rhys, TS Eliot, John Green, Stephanie Perkins, Maureen Johnson
Nazmi: Neil Gaiman, Douglas Adams.
Zairina: i love sophie kinsella and jodi piccoult. i feel like i could relate to the characters in their books (some). i like books that i can relate to and "feel" for the characters.
12. Books you recommend?
Teah: Everyone should read Harry Potter! (Also! I rec The Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson)
Nazmi: The Godfather, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
Zairina: Horrible Histories by Terry Deary. I love that book!
